Roadford lake Southwest Grandprix |
Last Sunday Alex Horlock sailing in the laser standard class won his first competition in the laser! The event took place at Roadford lake on sunday 5th June and 7 boats competed in the laser standard class. Horlock dominated the racing with 3 firsts but fellow competitor Ben Cornish, also sponsored by Graham Sykes insurance, was unable to make the event as he was away at the Skandia Sail for Gold regatta at the olympic venue in Weymouth. |
Follow his progress at skandiasailforgoldregatta.co.uk and look for Ben Cornish in the laser class. Next event is the junior world championships in La Rochelle, France. |
Laser GBR youth team qualifier series |
Exmouth’s youth laser sailors have been training hard all winter in preparation for the under 21 world championship qualifier series held over 4 events throughout the spring. The last event held at Pwhelli sailing club in north Wales took place last weekend ( 7th and 8th May) and saw 33 boats make the trip to the venue. Exe sailing club was represented by Ben Cornish (19) and Alex Horlock (18) who were ranked 10th and 11th respectively and on equal points going into the event. The first day brought light and shifty winds from the south east which meant only one race to count despite 6 attempted starts. Very frustrating for all involved but Horlock made the most of the light winds to post a tenth with Cornish finishing 21st . The Sunday was however a different story as the wind blew a strong force 5 from the south, whipping up a lumpy chop. Cornish, with his greater experience and fitness, posted a solid 12th 12th 11th putting him up to 14th overall. Horlock hung on in there with a consistent 20th 20th 21st to finish 19th overall at the event. |
This result left Cornish 10th and Horlock 13th in the under 21 selection series, meaning both qualified for the world championships in France later this year!! This event was also a ranker for the laser standard ladder which means Cornish now ranks 15th and Horlock 32nd senior in the country. Olympic gold medallist ranks number 1, a little way to go yet but the gap is closing … |
